"You Don't Need to Lose Weight"...

There's such a stigma around getting fit. It makes people roll their eyes and think, “Okay, we get it, you’re on a ‘fitness journey,’ shut up about it already.” Of course this isn’t always the case, but I see it often enough that it’s daunting to want to share anything about my own “journey.” I find that this is often more of an issue for women - especially those who are already “thin.” I often hear people say, "But you don't need to lose weight," or, "I think it might mostly be in your head." Or worst of all: "But I prefer a woman with a little meat on her bones." And that last one isn't to say that I judge women of any stature in any way, (literally) shape, or form. But when someone says those words to someone who has a goal to be healthy, or is already physically fit and/or muscular, these words can be so discouraging. It’s as if they don’t understand that you don’t get to just stop working out and eating healthy foods once you hit your...

Can I just start by saying how ridiculous the layout of this blog is? Like...why the ocean landscape? I've been to the ocean maybe 3 times in my life and I don't daydream about going back. Lake Michigan's cool, and it's right in my backyard (for the most part). Also, that profile pic needs to be updated. Soon enough. Or maybe never. WHO CARES. Clearly I don't. Anywho. So life has changed a bit, EH? Like, holy-farking-shirt, life has changed since last we spoke. New job. New apartment. New man. New life, basically. Remember that show A Christmas Wish  that I worked on in 2013 that I mentioned in my last post? That show was basically a catalyst for every other opportunity I have gotten since. That summer, I went off to tropical Terre Haute, Indiana and did repertory theatre all summer, and the next summer, and the summer after that. Have since performed at the Shedd Aquarium, the Chicago Musical Theatre Festival, and sung the National Anthem for the Chicago ...

Humans are ridiculous and I hate them.

I suppose it's time to update you all on my life in Chicago. God you're so needy. There honestly isn't a whole  lot to say. But enough that's it's worth posting. (^^^This is usually a sign that you're in for a long blog, so settle in, kiddos.) I'm still working at the Greek restaurant. I started out as a cashier, but after about a month or so one of our managers moved to the other location and so I was moved to the breakfast shift, where I basically run the place for 3 hours until everyone else shows up for lunch. It's not so bad, you get to know the "regulars" who come in every day and order the same thing, shoot the breeze while their food is being made, make friendly wagers about the Packers/Bears (and lose). But then there are the people who demand their food be made a certain way, and if it's anything more or less than what they asked for, they will bring it back to you, and they will demand a refund or a new meal. Humans are...

Job hunting is a funny thing.

I decided it was about time I updated the few of you who read these posts about how my life has been since I moved to Chicago. First of all - job hunting is a funny thing. You put in a hundred million applications to a hundred million stores, restaurants, hotels, even dog walking companies. You do it online, you do it in person, you do it....doggy style? That was way funnier in my head. I was worried sick that I wouldn't find a job and that I would slowly become the poorest person on the planet and have to live on subway cars that smell like pee and eat rats that I caught with my bare hands.  But when Jade and I got off the train on our first excursion into downtown Chicago, I saw a Bed Bath & Beyond literally right in front of me, and with my luck, they had a table full of applications and a sign that said "Join our team! Turn in an application and get an immediate interview." Well I did, and I was really hopeful for that job, but I never heard back from them. ...

We. Want. Attention.

Image
These thoughts are fresh in my mind and I need to write them down before they evaporate. Very recently I've been thinking about how social media has affected us as a whole, and myself personally. We post things that we hope people will notice. We live for how many "likes" that over-share of a status we posted will get, or how many people will Retweet that witty, completely original post about Jennifer Lawrence's tumble at the Oscars, or your super funny joke about the blackout at the Superbowl. Surely, no one else's post was as original as yours. There are even pages entirely dedicated to do nothing but post pictures for no apparent reason with the caption, "How many likes for this poor woman suffering from menstrual cramps? 1 Like = 1 Prayer."  Come on, people. We want people to like us. To notice us. We. Want. Attention. That's all social media is, really. Your Facebook timeline is one giant plea to your friends to notice you. You don...

You're welcome.

I really have to pee. I've been drinking a LOT more water lately than I'm used to drinking. Anyone who really knows me, knows that I hate water. If I could drink anything but water for the rest of my life and not gain tons of weight or die an early, sad, pathetic death, I would. (Hello, Rumchata. Or maybe horchata. Let's be reasonable.) But with all this water I've been drinking, comes more trips to the bathroom. And I find myself being too damn lazy to just get up and go. Like, in the mornings, the early early mornings, I'll wake up and realize that I have to pee. But I'm so comfortable that I don't want to get out of my cocoon. So I try to fall back to sleep and go to the bathroom when I wake up for reals. Now that I've bored you with pee-pee talk. Jade and I were just talking about Closed Captioning. He was watching me type, and noticed that I can type really quickly. It's true. *brush brush* Yesterday at the gym I was watching some news...

Why Not Zoidberg?

Hi. So, I just read the blog of a good friend of mine, and it inspired me to write the blog that you are (maybe) going to read. (Thanks, Ashley :) Since graduating last May, I haven't done much...I worked another summer at the golf course, did a few more Daddy D shows, had surgery to fix another hernia that magically popped up, got another job at the mall after my job at the golf course ended for winter, and watched a whole lot of TV series on NetFlix (including Parks & Recreation, Grey's Anatomy, Breaking Bad, catching up on Glee, and currently Ugly Betty). My life has hit a plateau. I have an amazing boyfriend with whom I've been for 10 months, and a really beautiful apartment, but I just feel like I haven't made anything of myself since graduating. People always tell me that that's normal, that you don't have to find your place in the world immediately upon graduating, but I just feel like I have literally done nothing but watched all my friends mov...

I like food.

Starting weight: 144 lbs. Yeah, I'm admitting this on the internet. Available to any and all who stumble upon this. (Which is probably the only way anyone will see this.) I'm trying it again. This whole "health" thing. I had another go at it this past summer, it lasted for about a month and a half, which is probably a record for me at this point in my life. After high school, I lost the constant movement and physical chaos of being in show choir, where we danced for 3 hours every other day, sometimes more. I also haven't gone through a heart-wrenching, appetite-reducing break-up in over a year, so I've been eating well, which...is an over-statement. I eat a lot. I like food. And I plan to still eat food. I just want to learn to control myself whenever I'm bored and feel like food is the solution. So, 144 is my starting point. By the time I get to New York, ideally I'd like to be at 125. Ideally. We'll see. Maybe this time I can stick with it....

Go find your own.

Hey Hi Hello! I have just spent a couple minutes reading some of my old posts. I would like to extend my sincerest apologies for dumping sad-and-lonely all over you. Like a bucket full of soda. Like, cuz...soda's fun to drink but when it's dumped all over you it dries and gets sticky and leaves you feeling gross and like you need a shower. This is my blog. What? I can tell by looking at the stats of my page when I felt the most depressed. I blog more when I'm depressed. I have more free time to sit and write for no reason, and more colorful language with which to write. It was pretty pathetic, really. So to make up for all the sad, I would like to dump some happy on you. So, there's this boy. I like him. He likes me, and he tells me how much he likes me on a daily basis. He holds my hand in public without my having to ask or demand it. He reaches out behind him, extending his hand to me, an indication for me to wrap my fingers between his. This is a big deal...

Accomplished and House-Wifey

Hi... I'm sitting in my apartment watching Parks and Rec  in the bedroom while my boyfriend and his bros are drafting their fantasy football teams. I made them pigs in a blanket. I feel accomplished and house-wifey. I'm writing now because I feel like maybe I should be, because in a few short months, I won't be living the same life, living in the same place, around the same people. So maybe I should write to remember these last few months here so that when I move to New York City, I can read these posts when I feel homesick. I've been doing almost literally nothing but working at the golf course this summer. I feel like I'm such a drag since I have to go to bed early in order to wake up at 5:30am. I haven't gone out as much as last summer, I haven't drank or been drunk, I haven't even been up to my cottage since Memorial Day weekend. I'm hoping that once school starts, and my hours are dropped a bit at work, I'll be able to let loose a litt...

GTFO

I am going to start my own world where people love each other and we don't need a ruler. We make decisions collectively, and we share everything. I want my friends to be able to get married and be able to visit each other in the hospital when one of them is sick or hurt. These are human rights. Why are we trying to alienate groups of people as if they were any less human? Have we learned nothing from our past? I hate the world. I don't care if this makes me unpatriotic, or unAmerican, or what-the-fuck-ever, but I really hate this country sometimes. And when I say sometimes, I'm only trying to cover my ass in case some super secret government spies are reading this blog and see that I'm saying anti-American statements and for some reason arrest me. Because I'd really like to say that I hate this country all the time. I hate politics. I hate that there are always  two sides to everything. I wish that I could say I never take sides, but I KNOW when something is w...

I AM A PINNING FIEND!!

Image
Lately, more than ever, I've been on a huge Pinterest kick. Ever since moving into this new place, a place that is NOT part of a complex with a hundred other identical apartment rooms and buildings, a place that actually feels like a home rather than an apartment, I keep trying to find ways to spruce it up even more and turn old things into kick-ass things. Right now, I'm trying to figure out something to do with this giant ass wardrobe we have that we don't use. I wanna turn it into something useful and functional. This is what I've found so far: For blankets or towels or clothes. I like this, but I like this other one just a little bit more...... For the kitchen. We have a giant space between the living room furniture and the front door, so this would be perfect to fill that empty space since it's right across from the kitchen. Plus, we have a lot of food and canned goods and spices, so this would be really great for sorting a...

I iz excited.

OH HAI! So I'm just gonna jump right into things. A lot of changes have happened in the last few months and I want to share them with you all cuz they're pretty awesome!! Mmkay. Here goes. -Cabaret was a huge success. I feel, maybe for the first time in my life, that I did my best with the role, and delved into the character, and gave it everything I had, and I am completely satisfied with my work and performance as Sally Bowles. -My boyfriend and I moved into an apartment on Broadway. It's a super awesome apartment, and now I can say I live on Broadway. It's above a bar, so we have to deal with loud music for most of the day, but it really isn't that loud except for on weekends, and apparently, I've learned that I can sleep through mostly anything. The bar has live DJs on some weekends, and they stack the speakers high to the ceiling, so everything in our apartment vibrates and knocks over picture frames and soap bottles and things like that. But, I can...

Yeah, I blogged again.

OH HEY! How's it going? That's good to hear/I'm sorry to hear that. I've decided that only posting when I have something funny to say or I'm super depressed is unacceptable, and I apologize to any of you who actually like to read these blogs for my last of updation. I made up that word. Updation. Eat it. So let's see here. What's happened since my last post? A LOT. I'm in a much  better place now than I've been in probably since I started this blog, and much, much before then, as well. Truth is, I haven't been truly happy in a long, long time, and I have no one but myself to blame for that. Sure, there were outside sources causing my depression, but it was I who was letting it get to me, and keep me down in the rut that I was in for as long as I was in it. The secret to happiness, as I've learned it to be? Letting go. Rid yourself of anything that's caused you grief. If you're hanging on to something simply because once it...

Why I hate January.

Have you ever had leftovers sitting in your fridge, in its little styrofoam to-go box, waiting to be finished, and for the entire day, all you can think about is how badly you want to consume these leftovers, and then when you get home you pop them in the microwave, take a bite, and they are just not as satisfying as you'd hoped they'd be? It's like the worst feeling in the world. That just happened to me. I actually feel rather vomitous right now after eating that leftover chicken alfredo. Blast. Anyway. HAPPY 2012, Y'ALL! I'm blogging because I've been forced to think about one subject that I feel the need to explain: I hate January. I feel as though I've explained this already in a previous blog entry, but I don't give a shit and I'm sure you don't either, so here goes. There is nothing special about January. Yes, it is the first month of the year, so that gives it a little credibility, but aside from that, what does January have...

Music worth investing in.

I'm sitting here in my Gender Development class, listening to my feminist professor give a presentation (PowerPoint included) on Women's Studies and how the entire area of study isn't really helping women's rights or women's anything at all. I'm not a fan. Not a fan. So instead of actually paying attention, I decided to go through all the Genius Recommendations that the iTunes store had to offer me, and jot down all the artists that seemed interesting (basically whichever ones said "Similar to: Ingrid Michaelson/Sara Bareilles"). If anyone knows anything about any of these bands or artists, please comment below or Facebook me, and tell me what you think, and if their music is worth investing in. MATT WHITE YAEL NAIM RACHAEL YAMAGATA MARIE DIGBY THE CIVIL WARS SHE & HIM LUCY SCHWARTZ - Winter in June KATIE COSTELLO KERI NOBLE ALLISON WEISS KATIE HERZIG COMMUNIST DAUGHTER KT TUNSTALL SUFJAN STEVENS KATE VOEGELE THE HEREAFTER MADISON MISSY HIGG...

Sara Bareilles makes me question my life choices.

I've given so much of myself to ensure that all my loved ones are happy, and I'm afraid I have nothing left to give to myself. The feeling of being empty is disconcerting. I am very blessed to have such wonderful, amazing people in my life and I love them all to pieces, and I would do anything for them. But sometimes giving up all you have for the people you care about makes you come up short when all you want to do is feel happy yourself. I give out more than I get back. And that isn't saying that my friends and loved ones aren't giving and generous, it just means that I am perhaps overly generous. A friend of mine pointed out to me the other day that I am incapable of loving only a little. This is probably true. No, this is definitely true. Why expend only a little energy? That doesn't seem fair. But in the same instance, the greater the love, the harder the fall, the greater the pain. Time to give back to myself a bit. I'm not really sure what that en...

I do my best blogging in the PM's.

HEY YOU. .... Pay attention to me. I am a master at drawing attention. Bing bang boom. I do my best blogging in the PM's. That's when my thoughts run rampant and are usually never coherent. Which, duh, makes for the best blogs. I felt the urge to blog today because it was a momentous day in the history of this little thing we call Earth. (H'okay. So....) First of all, it was Veteran's Day. Now, I've never gone out of my way to celebrate this holiday except by keeping in mind what all of our Vets have done for this country. But today I got to do a little celebrating by doing what I do best: sangin'. I sang the National Anthem at the UWGB men's basketball game. My parents, as season ticket holders for the women's basketball season, have always told me that I need to get out on the court and sing the National Anthem, but I never knew how to go about it, how to get my name on whatever list that may exist for it, who to talk to about singing...

Good times in the [Friend Zone.]

I am afeared that I have very little about which to write. This usually happens. I have all these thoughts and stories and jokes that I feel would make a fantastic blog post, but when all these things occur in my mind, do I ever  have a computer at hand to write them down? Of course not. And then I finally get to a computer, and I either don't remember what I wanted to write about or I have no good ideas. I will start with my current state of being. I'm watching MTV, and of course, there are no music videos playing, but rather a new show called "The Friend Zone," which is about people who have a certain friend with which they are friends, but they wish to be more, so MTV, being the kind-hearted, selfless people that they are, help these poor souls (call them person A) by putting them on TV and telling their love-interest (person B) that they are going to be the wingman for them on a blind date, but the blind date is actually all fake and the setup is really for pe...

Back with a vengeance.

We meet again, blogosphere. I'm not going to lie, I don't know how coherent or entertaining this blog is going to be. I'm real distracted at the moment, but I've been meaning to blog for a long time now, and dammit, I plan on following through. The people must get what they want. I am eating cake. It was my birthday last week Thursday, and my mom's is the day after mine, so we have a plethora of baked goods left over from our joint celebration. (And by joint I mean conjoined...) So, here I am, eating cake, and watching Antiques Road Show with my parents while I put off studying for an exam that I have tomorrow. Yesterday I watched the Melissa McCarthy episode of SNL on Hulu. As I was waiting for it to buffer, I went to Subway to get dinner. I came home and ate while I watched the episode. It was all right, she's hilarious, but I think some of the skits were sort of strange and forgettable. When I clicked out of the video and back to the interwebs, I foun...
